Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
