Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
